Are preoperative sore throats a problem for oral and maxillofacial surgery?

Answer Anita – If the sore throat is, in fact, due to a bacteria then it is best to not have the surgery at this time. The excess number of living bacteria in your mouth could infect the bone that is exposed during surgery. This could produce a significant bone infection that could prevent appropriate healing. I am assuming that a culture and sensitivity was done via a mouth swab to definitely determine the specific bacteria causing the sore throat. So in summary, if the sore throat is still present I would suggest postponing the surgery. It is not worth the negative effects of bacterial invasion into surgical traumatized bone. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me again. By the way, even if you are having a viral infection now, I would postpone the surgery until you are completely healthy.
