Why are we ranking teams before we even see them play? Sure for the most part it can be an accurate beginning to the season and besides who doesn’t want to know who the best is and where your team might rank? But is it counter productive to choose teams before we see how these teams handle their first tests of the season? It’s very rare that teams will schedule a major match up early in the season. Most programs including those in the top 5 have hard games until usually week 3. So why not do official rankings at the end of week 3? You could even make an argument to rank after week 1 and still be very valid. 2008 Georgia was ranked number 2. They weren’t very convincing and ended up ranked 15th by the end of the season. Need further proof? Number 1 Ohio State ended up a whooping number 10. Ohio State lost to USC by 32 points in their third game of the season! Georgia only won by 7 to South Carolina in their third week. It would have been a very tale tale sign to have those teams rank in
