Poppy seeds when consumed can result in small amounts of morphine (an opiate) being present in the individuals system. Several factors, including the amount consumed and the way the individual has metabolised the poppy seeds, will influence whether the levels found will be above the permitted levels. It is the role of the MRO to review all circumstances of a confirmed positive drug test result and determine if a legitimate explanation exists, substantiate and document that explanation, and report the result as negative.
