Are Political Parties good for Democracy?

With the voting system we have today I don’t think multiple parties would work very well. I exist in California, as such I watched the recall of Governor Davis. There were so many running for his seat that it really became a joke. Can you imagine a country where 4 or 5 percent of the voters elect a president. I think with parties splintered there would be a need for at least one run off and perhaps two for each presidential campaign. I can easily see 25 candidates with the top vote getter coming up with 6% of the vote. IMO you would have to take enough candidates to represent 50%. That could be 10 or more for the first run off. This particular scenario could easily go to 3 or 4 run offs. The cost and lag in that sort of a system could spell the end of our government.
