Are platform lifts restricted to two stops with doors on opposite ends of the platform?
No. Although two stop lifts with doors on opposite ends of the platform are the preferred, most effective and universally functional design, other configurations may be approved as modifications when design features in excess of the minimum requirements of MSBC 1307 are provided which assure independent and unassisted use of the lift. For example, if a stop creates a condition where it is necessary for a wheelchair user to back off the lift, an automatic opening door at that stop would allow the individual to independently exit the lift by backing off the platform. Therefore, the provision of automatic opening doors, when provided in addition to the minimum code requirements for lifts, would allow lifts to have more than two stops or stops on the same side of the platform.
