This conspiracy theory comes from the idea that physicians have a vested interest in keeping people from being “too healthy” otherwise we’ll lose business, and that physicians in real world private practice have some sort of loving relationship with Big Pharm. Trust me, there’s an awful lot of sick people to go around to physicians aren’t looking to keep people sick. I have zero affiliation with Pharmaceutical companies and have mostly hatred for much of what they do, but holding back on cures for diseases doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for them (they’re in the business of making money, first and foremost). So you have to figure there’s a lot of illnesses out there. We’re not good at curing all that many of them, regrettably. An awful lot of people die from disease (and contrary to popular disease, a lot of these people are members of physicians’ families or members of Pharmaceutical companies’ families).
