Are personality traits inherited?
On One Hand: Predetermined at BirthThe nature side of the debate about personality development argues genetics and biologically based predispositions are the primary determinants of personality. According to this perspective, an individual’s personality is predetermined at birth, and little can be done to improve or impair. Societal and environmental influences are discounted.On the Other: Determined by environmentThe nurture side argues personality traits are posited to be wholly influenced by environment. John Locke (1632–1704), an English philosopher, hypothesized that an infant is a “tabula rasa,” or blank state. Learning experiences, child-rearing methods, societal changes and culture all interact to shape personality. Little credence is given to the importance of individual temperament on personality.Bottom LineNeither argument provides a sufficient explanation for personality. Personality traits are influenced by a complex interplay between genetics and environment.
