Are pedometers accurate enough for calories burnt?
Pedometers are not accurate. They have a considerable margin of error. As you know you have to set your stride length into them, their accuracy then entirely depends on every single step you take being exactly that and the same length. In reality this just doesn’t happen and the further you walk the greater the potential error. Be very wary of electronic calorie counters. They have an even wider margin for error than distance travelled as measured by a pedometer and even at their very best should only be considered to be a rough guide. The amount of calories you burn depends on a surprisingly large number of variables that simple counters just do not take into account. We would need to know things such as your age, gender, weight, BMI, level of general fitness, the speed and intensity you walked at, heart rate, up hill, down hill, level ground, any stops, even the temperature and level of humidity has an influence. If you just strolled along slowly, the lower count would probably be cl
