Are Paintings Just Decorations? Wednesday December 14, 2005When you paint do you paint for decoration or are you driven to paint for other reasons? This is the question Brian’s raised on the Painting forum. Brian says: “Most of the public that I come in contact with seem to think of a painting as a decorative item. Something that will suit the colors of the room or the theme of their taste. I must have missed something years ago. I don’t see paintings in this way at all. I look at a painting as an entity onto itself; separated from other items [but] I believe there is a tendancy for artists to eventually paint that which there is a market for. … I know we all say that we have to paint for ourself first and I have said it so often myself… but sometimes I wonder?”
