Are pageants beauty contests?
JS: I think Miss America is getting away from that. You have to be so much more in Miss America. You have to have a talent, interview well, and have a platform for what you would accomplish as Miss America. Your scholastics are factored in to the résumé and essay when you apply. Most important, you must have a background in community service. They want the All-American girl. GIJ: You are also an athlete. JS: I have completed 12 marathons. Again, it is all about the challenge. Being an athlete helps my ability to serve in the military and gives me the confidence to get on stage in a swimsuit. I am not the skinniest girl up there in the competition, but I know it isn’t about who is the skinniest – it is about being your best and being confident. Unlike some of the other women, I have muscles. That is mostly from running 10K with a 40 lbs. rucksack. GIJ: You are more muscular than the other contestants?
