Are oxidation numbers an indicator of an elements charge?

0

Oxidation numbers only indicate the charge of an ion, not atoms. Oxidation numbers aren’t always a representation of their ions (ie. group 2 element being +2), you have to see what they are combined with first. Always look to see if they are combined with oxygen, hydrogen or fluorine. Uncombined elements have an oxidation state of 0.
