Are Open Access journals and books built on a premise that they are “free”?
They are built on a premise of free access. However, this doesn’t mean that they are free to produce (there are costs to produce any article / book / journal). Still, a premise of free means that anyone with an Internet access can read, comment, share and reproduce Open Access works. Open Access assumes that research should be accessible to readers without barriers. Therefore, the costs involved in editing, refereeing, producing, and distributing a journal are expected to be managed through a business model other than payment required to gain the access to the content.
