Are offshore wells and pipelines vulnerable to damage from hurricanes?
Hurricane Katrina damaged dozens of rigs but did not result in an environmental disaster. Federal reports found no lasting environmental impacts from the spills that occurred during the storm. Safety features in the rigs prevented major spills, and the most serious incidents came from onshore storage tank and pipeline ruptures. The federal government has since improved safety regulations to require more durable onshore facilities.
