Along with a resume, the personalized cover letter used to be a staple of any job search toolkit. In recent years, however, a couple of different trends have led many to slim down their cover letters, or stop using them altogether. First, there’s the matter of an employer’s time. Now more than ever, a company might have a regular employee or manager – as opposed to a full-time recruiter – looking over resumes for an opening. These men and women just don’t have the available hours to read every cover letter that comes in, and so many letters end up being tossed aside in favor of a quick look through a candidate’s background and qualifications.
