Are NY county lawmakers right to ban BPA baby bottles?”
This BPA bottle discussion is quite ridiculous. There is NO proof of BPA being harmful in any way, and there is much more risky stuff out there to be worried about. BPA in bottles is NOT the worst threat to mankind. Bisphenol A, commonly abbreviated as BPA, is an organic compound with two phenol functional groups. It is a difunctional building block of several important plastics and plastic additives. With an annual production of 2–3 million metric tonnes, it is an important monomer in the production of polycarbonate. Suspected of being hazardous to humans since the 1930s, concerns about the use of bisphenol A in consumer products was regularly reported in the news media in 2008 when several governments issued reports questioning its safety, and some retailers removed products made from it off their shelves. Bisphenol A has low acute toxicity, with an oral LD50 of 3250 mg/kg in rats, but it is an endocrine disruptor. Low doses of bisphenol A can mimic the body’s own hormones, possibly
NY county lawmakers vote to ban BPA baby bottles SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (AP) – Lawmakers in one New York county have voted to ban the sale of baby bottles made with a chemical that some studies have suggested is harmful to young children. The measure passed Tuesday by the Suffolk County legislature would ban the use of the chemical BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups sold for use by children under 4. Officials say that if the measure receives final approval it would be the first of its kind in the U.S. Similar measures are under consideration elsewhere, including the Washington state legislature. Canada has already banned BPA in baby bottles. BPA is used in many types of plastics. The chemical industry contends it is safe. The Food and Drug Administration last year agreed it was safe but is doing more research. “This is a victory for all consumers, but most of all for our youngest ones,” said Dr. Urvashi Rangan, senior scientist and policy analyst for Consumers Union, based in Yonkers, N.Y.
