GUI Java applications are a quite slow. At least on my 486/33 you will not have too much fun with it. But non-GUI Java programs (Windows based people often says console or DOS) are much faster than other interpreted languages (such as Perl or Python). There are fast as many C programs. See Proxy cache Benchmarks, Section 9.
