Are nitrites harmful to fish?
Nitrites can be more harmful to your fish than ammonia can. The nitrites suppresses a fish’s ability to carry oxygen in its bloodstream. Even slight amounts can cause stress to the fish and larger amounts will cause them to suffocate. More time will be needed for the nitrites to be converted into nitrates (by nitrobacter bacteria) before the pond is ready for fish to be introduced.
