I offer some food for thought. I am casting my mind back to the June 12 elections in 1993. (Wow! That was 14 years ago!). I was in Kano that day, I was quite surprised when I encountered several Northerners who had cast a vote, and they said they voted for MKO Abiola. I took particular note of a response I got from our house help a young man of about 23 years old at the time. He said, well you know for all these years it has been Northerners leading Nigeria and his life has not gotten better, his suffering is worse, well this time he said since his own people had not made his life better, why not try a person who is not from the north? (Recall, MKO Abiola’s opponent was Bashir Tofa a Northern Kano based businessman). So I believe in 1993, the Nigerian electorate was educated enough to vote.
