Are newspapers recycled anymore?
Re Earth Day: When we talk about recycling newspapers, how much of it is actually recycled? The Ansonia Boy Scouts have a paper drive every year. This is great, but also the only recycling of newspapers I am aware of. When I was a teenager back in the early ’50s, two other boys and I went door-to-door collecting old newspapers. When we accumulated a sufficient amount, we hauled them to an Arcanum or New Paris scrap yard and sold them. The people living in the community saved their papers for us. We got rid of the papers for them and also made some money. We usually received between 50 and 75 cents per 100 pounds for the newspapers.
