Are natural dreads better than backcombed dread?
First of all you need long hair to grow natural dreads. Natural dreads seem to grow thicker, but they do take longer, and you have to deal with having crazy hair for a while. More and more people e-mail me about their thin, backcombed dreads. They all wanted them right away, but now wish they had taken the natural rout. Even if you have the straightest hair on the face of the earth, you can get it to dread naturally. It needs a little help for some people but it will happen. Lots of people don’t think they have the patience for natural dreads, so they go buy a flea comb and start making insta-dreads. A few months later they look in the mirror and realize their dreads are becoming thinner and thinner. Then they write to me and ask how they can cut out there backcombed dreads and start the natural dreadlocking process. Its all up to you.
