But during the current economic recession it has become even tougher as newspapers compete and rationalise in an attempt to stem dwindling circulations and advertising monies. Job cuts at the Manchester Evening News and its 23 regional sister papers have left many wondering whether bad news will lead to no news for local communities in the future. The NUJ believes regional papers are being sacrificed in order to support loss making nationals like The Guardian.
