Are my car insurance details kept on a central database?
There are several databases where different details are kept. Although the information you give them will be checked against those databases, you’re still required to give in. What exactly they can tell you, is limited by the information they get, and the privacy laws. If you’re talking about CLAIMS information, the Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange information is limited to dollar amount, type of claim, date of claim, name of driver, name of policyholder. I think that’s it. So if you ask, “what was that accident about”? they can’t tell you, because they don’t KNOW. They get just enough to know if they have to surcharge you or not. The details, you have to get from the prior insurer.
