Are mullet good to eat?
Most people who have tried mullet (myself included) will tell you that they taste pretty much like cardboard, though Ive come across a few people who seem to like them. Knowing how to prepare them is part of the answer, so is the secret of cooking them in the right sauces (as the Chinese do). For my part, if I want a fish to eat, theres certainly fish that taste a lot better and which are far easier to catch. The other problem with eating mullet that you need to remember is that they are a long-lived species, often frequenting polluted estuaries and sewage out-falls. Feeding mainly by ingesting mud from the bottom, and passing that very slowly through their long digestive tracts, and remembering that a 3lb fish has been doing that for the last ten years, I reckon that there has been plenty of time for dangerous pollutants to build up in mullet flesh.
