Are MRSA infections in animals increasing?
On the face of it, yes, but studies on meticillin resistant infections in animals are in their infancy. Preliminary, referral hospital based studies suggest carriage in 10% of dogs. MRSA comprise approximately 3% of submissions to veterinary laboratories. Recognition of the problem, better isola-tion techniques and better reporting may all have contributed to the apparent increase in cases. Better data will allow more accurate monitoring of trends in the future. Despite this, infections re¬main uncommon.
