Are mountain lions in California threatened by the loss of their habitat?
Yes. We are destroying wildlife habitat at the rate of 150 acres a day. We are destroying it to build roads, homes, dams, strip malls — all kinds of things. Do you offer communities safety advice if they are located in mountain-lion territory? We like to first prevent any conflicts between humans and mountain lions. We tell communities that they should always protect mountain-lion habitat and that they should definitely preserve the cougar’s corridors. Corridors? What does that mean? A corridor is a migration trail, a narrow strip of land between two larger habitats. Mountain lions need access to a large amount of habitat, because lions require around 150 square miles to hunt in. How wide does a corridor have to be? Like, a half mile? Not even that. There is a freeway underpass that is used as a corridor in Coal Canyon, between the Cleveland Forest and the Santa Ana Mountains of Southern California. To get back to your original question, we tell communities a lot of obvious things —
