Are most deer shot at relatively close range?
Eeesh….this is a really hard question to answer and I really don’t think that you can ever say definitively what the average distance a deer is shot at. However, if I were to guess, I would have to say that you are probably on the right track. I feel there are a few things that you have to look at when you are reading your stories and there are some reasons that +100 yard shots may be rarer than longer shots: 1. What weapon is being used? Archery? Muzzleloader? Rifle? Handgun? Shotgun? Out of all of these weapons, only a rifle and then only the higher calibers are capable of ethically taking deer consistently at over 200 yards. With the explosion of professional hunters…..the ones you read about most…..going to archery for the challenge and allure then you won’t hear of many shots farther than 40-70 yards away. 2.
