Are Miami Schools in Financial Crisis?
In a recent board meeting of the Miami schools board members were met with some extremely vocal parents, grandparents, and even students. They weren’t there to sing the praises of these leaders, but rather to protest the possible closing of their Miami schools. One school in particular, Emerson Elementary, had tons of supporters present. The discussion to close some schools in Miami is being held as a way to help solve the plan to cut over $240 million dollars from the budget. Emerson, with a low enrollment of over 200 students is seen by some to be a drain on the purse strings of the district. But it’s hard to see why it made the list despite its low student population, since the schools has an “A” ranking from the state of Florida. It is unclear at this point why district officials of Miami schools feel the need to trim the fat, but with the flagging economy, it’s not surprising that they feel it necessary.
