Are Mercury outboard motors made in Japan by Mercury or someone else (Tohatsu)?
Mercury & Nissan below 40 hp. are made by Tohatsu. 40 hp and above are made by Suzuki. You can save yourself a bundle of money by buying a Tohatsu or Suzuki, they are the exact same engines as Merc and Nissan with different brand stickers on the covers. Also they are made in “sets” the 4, 5, 6 hp. are the same engines with the low end and high end idle screws adjusted higher to give more horsepower at a higher RPM. The only real difference is in the price. Same with the 7, 8 & 9 hp. etc. all the way up the line. So if you want a 9 hp., you can save a few hundred dollars if you buy a 7 hp. and adjust an increase of the idle screws yourself.
