Are Mennonites considered to be Christians?
A Christian is a person who professes belief in Jesus as Christ or follows a religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus. By this definition, individuals of the Mennonite, the Amish and other Anabaptists religious traditions are Christian. Mennonite beliefs and practices vary widely, but following Jesus in daily life is a central value. Mennonites repudiate infant baptism, oaths, law-suits, civil office-holding and the bearing of arms. They look to the Lord ’s Supper as a memorial. Mennonites and Amish belong to the Anabaptist religious view. While Anabaptist are distinct from either the Protestant or Roman Catholic traditions, its believers are no less Christian.
If an Amish person accepts the redemption of Jesus Christ, embracing the assurance of salvation, and desires to move forward with a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus, they would typically gravitate to one of the more conservative Mennonite churches in the area. Mennonites typically would accept an Amish person who has embraced Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
