Are members with potentially terminal medical conditions given special treatment?
Claims submitted by members with potentially terminal medical conditions are expedited. Examples include: metastasized cancer and kidney/renal failure. The claimant, a family member, or the employer should contact us to alert the Retirement Agency that the medical condition is terminal. • Is the documentation for terminal cases different? All documentation is the same. The Medical Board requires a current doctors statement. The doctors statement should include: • a description of the illness and treatment • the doctors opinion as to whether the member is disabled from performing the job • a statement that the claimant has a terminal condition (diagnosis & prognosis) • Approved claims: • When a claim for disability retirement is approved, a letter is sent to the member advising that he/she has 120 days from the date of the letter to accept the decision. Information may not be provided over the telephone. Disability benefit estimates are also sent to the applicant. • The following forms
