Are Melamine Plates Harmful?
Melamine is an organic chemical typically combined with formaldehyde to create melamine resin. Melamine resin is fire-resistant and tolerates high heat well. Its stable structure makes melamine ideal for use in all types of products, from plastics to commercial fish food to dishware. The safety of melamine came into question after several pets died from eating tainted pet food in 2007, followed by a number of infants in China dying or sustaining permanent kidney damage from drinking formula laced with melamine in 2008.
