Are Medications Best for IBS Symptoms?
Because the symptoms of IBS vary from person to person, there is no standard form of IBS treatment. Suppose, for example, a physician has a patient with chronic diarrhea. The physician may consider IBS as a cause for the errant digestive performance. As such, an effective IBS treatment would be desirable, even though most methods can treat only one or more symptoms of the actual condition. Many over-the-counter (OTC) medications can treat at least one symptom of IBS, but nothing yet has been discovered than can treat them all without serious side effects. Moreover, no true “cure” presently exists for IBS. Some patients respond well to an OTC medication, while yet others may feel these drugs do not warrant the inherent risk of unwanted side effects. Some patients experience bloating, abdominal pains, or embarrassing gas with many of these drugs.
