Are medication administration records (MAR) and counting of medications required for residents who self-administer?
No, although it would be good practice because there would be a list of the medications that the resident is taking. If an MAR is maintained, it is also good practice to indicate self-administration on the form, especially if staff document when the resident takes his/her medication, or so staff will know why there is no documentation on the MAR, especially when a resident self-administers some medications but not all of them. The resident’s ability to self-administer should be evaluated on an ongoing basis.
