Are medical schools eligible to apply for an IGERT grant?
As stated in the NSF Grant Proposal Guide, the NSF does not support research relating to the diagnosis, detection, or treatment of disease in humans or animal models. We do not fund students in clinical graduate programs including MD, MD/Ph.D., DVM, etc. However, the NSF does support research in biomedical engineering and research that, because of its fundamental science content, may be applicable to these problems. A proposal aimed primarily at a medical application would thus not be appropriate for IGERT. Proposals with strong basic science and/or engineering that because of their nature would have relevance to health are appropriate and have been funded (follow links for Find an IGERT on this site for information on our current awards). From the NSF Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide: “NSF does not normally support technical assistance, pilot plant efforts, research requiring security classification, the development of products for commercial marketing, or market resea
