Are massages really relaxing and do they help cure sporting injuries such as strained muscles?
It all depends. One, no one helps cure injuries or conditions – the body heals itself. We just help it along correctly to facilitate healing. Two, the type of massage should be tailored to the condition itself. There’s major differences between swedish, therapeutic, sports, myofascial, etc massages. Massage can be relaxing (Swedish techniques, energy work) or can be a little more painful but feels better afterward (Rolfing, Hellerwork, myofascial release, deep tissue) It’s up to you to decide. Check out NCBTMB’s or AMTA’s locator to find a therapist in your area. Swedish is generally what you’d get at a spa, though you may be able to find one who has had some specialized training.
