Are masks helpful in filtering bioterrorism agents?
If you are engaged in an activity that exposes you to a potential threat, masks which provide high level filtration are an effective barrier against the inhaled form of anthrax or other airborne diseases. In other select situations, it may be appropriate to wear high level filtration, properly fitted masks to protect against certain biological agents. In general, this would apply to first responders and to people caring for patients with contagious biological diseases, such as smallpox or plague. Except for these select settings, however, use of masks is NOT recommended because the risk is so low and the masks are uncomfortable to wear.
