Are many students starting their job search earlier — before they finish their senior year?
That’s the general trend across the nation and in Utah now. Historically, if you waited till the end of senior year to start your job search, that’s not the best strategy to get a good job in your field. We encourage students to come in by at least the beginning of their junior year. Students have to find out how to get internships, and how to connect with the employer to find out what they need to do to be as qualified as possible for the job. More students are now very vigilant and concerned about getting employment after graduation. But some are still waiting until the last minute to shape up their employment-seeking skills. In April, which is the end of the school year, we saw a massive spike in the number of students coming into our center for employment-related counseling and they’re coming in with much more anxiety and worries about the job hunt.
