Are Mail Order Brides still common in the United States?
HA! I was just wondering this myself (you saw that question about the avatar, didn’t you?!) INSIDE the US, I don’t think so. I doubt there are many people inside the US selling their children. There may be a SMALL underground trade, but I don’t think there is much at all. Even doing a google search for it didn’t turn up much. However, there is a little more market for mail order brides from outside the US. Just the other day I was watching a documentary on this (and sex workers, which really is a similar industry) on TVO. Apparently it’s still rather common in Eastern Europe, especially Ukraine. The women featured were sent all over the place, mostly Europe, but other continents as well. People can’t afford to pay the bills, so if they need money, (or in the case of this documentary, many of them had relatives needing medical care) they have no choice but to sell themselves, either temporarily in the form of sex-trade, or permanently in the form of mail order brides.
