Are lightsabers real?
On One Hand: They’re Science FictionThe technology required to create lightsabers belongs solely to the realm of fantasy. They’re “laser swords” wielded through the aid of a mystic energy field called The Force. In actuality, lasers have no set size, and you can’t block or parry their focused light the way Jedi Knights do in the movies. On the Other: They’re Real Cultural IconsLightsabers have become a cultural icon, appearing in countless comic books, novels and video games in addition to the six “Star Wars” movies. You can purchase replicas at science fiction conventions, and toy stores sell plastic lightsabers to children. Moreover, certain industrial tools, such as blowtorches, perform many of the same functions as lightsabers.Bottom LineThe answer depends on how you look at it. Lightsabers don’t literally exist and probably never will: that galaxy far, far away operates according to different rules than ours.
