Are Laws Needed to Better Protect the Privacy of Digital Data?
Within weeks of Internet-search company Google’s $3.1 billion takeover of online advertising giant DoubleClick, privacy advocates were filing briefs with the Federal Trade Commission warning of dire privacy implications over the increasing collection of personal data on Internet users. “Google’s proposed acquisition of DoubleClick will give one company access to more information about the Internet activities of consumers than any other company in the world,” the Electronic Privacy Information Center warned in a complaint to the FTC.
