Are landlords liable for tenants unpaid water bills?
Additional details – no you are most definately not liable for tennants bills – it’s their problem. the water company are trying it on in a pathetic, and ILLEGAL attemp to get their money back. All you have to do is explain the situation and perhaps prove that you were not resident in the flat. That is it. Just relax. Legal rubbish like this is always a very long and drawn out process. Here is what I would do: Make two calls to the water company on Monday. In the first call, don’t mention this debt letter to ensure they co-operate with you, just tell them that you need a copy of their record of when you lived at the flat, as you need a bill as proof of where you lived over the last five years for an application form you are filling out for a new job or something. Once they agree to post or email or fax this to you, then contact the water company again in a seperate call on Monday and talk to them about this debt letter.
