Are laboratory tests available to help in the diagnosis of Lyme disease?
The most commonly available tests look for antibodies to B. burgdorferi, which an infected person produces in response to the infection. Antibodies take several weeks to develop. They may not be present in the early stages of the erythema migrans rash, but they are usually present in the later stages of the infection. More detailed tests are available to investigate complicated cases.
