Are Kiltrea pots frost proof?
Kiltrea Terracotta, Tuscan Umber and Yellow- ware are high fired and guaranteed for five years not to disintegrate or laminate from frost provided the correct pot shape is chosen and the pot is correctly potted up. Certain pot shapes are more susceptible to be cracked by frozen contents. Wet soil expands as it freezes, therefore flared open- topped containers are less likely to experience frost cracking, as their shape allows soil to expand upwards. It is critical that the drainage holes remain unblocked and the correct amount of drainage material is used. Up to the bottom third of the pot can be filled with broken crockery, chippings or stones the remainder should be planted using good quality compost. If possible, it is wisest to remove pots to a sheltered location in frosty weather.
