The African Charter on Human & Peoples’ Right has been domesticated by Nigeria. This treaty provides in its Article 14 that the right to property is guaranteed and may only be encroached upon in the interest of public need or in the general interest of the community and in accordance with the appropriate laws upon the payment of compensation.
