Are hot water recirculation systems efficient?
On One Hand: Passive Recirculation Systems Are EfficientA passive recirculation system is efficient because it maintains the hot water for the shortest distance. A small pump is placed on the hot water heater outlet to pressurize the hot water system to three to four psi. Bypass valves are installed at remote locations, such as, the kitchen and bathroom sinks. The bypass valves let some hot water into the cold water system periodically, which is returned to the hot water heater to maintain the hot water at a certain level. On the Other: Closed Loop Active Systems Are Not EfficientThe closed loop active system is very inefficient because the hot water pipes run twice the distance, all the way to the furthest faucet and back to the hot water heater. The hot water is maintained throughout the system and looses the most thermal energy.Bottom LineThe closed loop active system will provide the most hot water comfort but at a high cost. The passive recirculation system will provide increased h
