Are honor killings like Ratan Mandal, getting more news coverage or just increasing?
Personally, I think they’ve been happening all along, but we’ve become much more aware of what’s going on outside our own countries. “Some experts estimate that 200 to 300 honor killings like Zahra’s occur every year in Syria. Most receive little or no attention.” http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/0214/p07s02-wome.html “There are no reliable statistics but it is thought at least 60 women are killed in honour killings in Turkey each year.” http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4546992.stm “There are no accurate statistics on the number of honour crimes committed in Jordan annually, but according to a report by the Christian Science Monitor in March 2005, honour crimes account for one-third of all violent deaths in Jordan.” http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/IRIN/6f6d5166f24330a0e8edcb79796ca5cc.htm The numbers have to be much higher than these, as numerous amounts of these killings go unreported. Very sad.
