Are homemade shampoos and conditioners a good way to go?

I don’t know what ethnicity you are, I’m black and have thick afro hair. I tried so many products without very much success until I started making my own. Now I use a mix of home-made and brought products. All my research came from: motown girl’s hair website(type it into google, she has LOADS of home made recipes),black hair media and long hair care forum plus you save alot of money. My rules: 1) Say no to shampoo. I know it’s sounds a bit rank, but I barely use shampoo. We’ve got this ridiculous notion that suds=clean when they don’t. For dry hair, shampoos are a nightmare as they strip the hair shaft of all it’s natural oils. So I tend to either co-wash (wash my hair with a conditioner which I may add some brown sugar to, to exfoliate my scalp), wash with a shampoo mixed with water or wash with a very dilute solution of bicarbonate of soda. All of which keep my hair squeaky clean without excessive dryness. 2) Pre-poo. Before washing I do a deep treatment, basically to stop it drying
