Are heavy trucks damaging the bridge?
The heaviest load on the bridge is its own weight—all day, every day. Truck and car traffic together make up only three percent of the total load on the main pier foundations, and opening and closing the bridge puts more stress on the bridge than the trucks crossing over it. Even though the bridge carries very heavy truck traffic, and trucks weigh much more than they did in 1931, restricting trucks from using the bridge would not allow us to keep the bridge in service. The bridge’s underlying structural problems would be unchanged.
