Are grazing bits good for beginners to ride in?
No, grazing bits are not a good choice because they are stiff and can eventually make the horse stiff, too. I’d suggest a D-ring snaffle with copper rollers, or some type of bit with a snaffle mouth and a shank. Grazing bits aren’t good to turn a horse in, (unless he neckreins VERY well) and they aren’t too good to stop in, either. Beginning riders can also numb a horse’s mouth with one of these bits, since they put a little pressure on the tounge & sides of the mouth. I suggest you try some kind of snaffle; if you know any horse people, perhaps you can ask to borrow a couple of bridles with different bits. That way you can try different bits on him, and you’ll be able to see what he responds well to. Then, when you’ve tried alot and thought about it, buy th
