Are Golkars policies such as poverty eradication and increasing welfare enough to attract voters?
I think they are clichs. Government officials talk about it nearly every year. I don’t see any new, specific programs to attract votes. It seems Golkar has run out of new ideas. Considering this, why will Golkar still win (about 70 percent of the vote) in the election? What you are curious about bothers me. There is an assumption behind it that Golkar will win because of cheating. You may consider Golkar dishonest, but in the last election (1992), Golkar did win in Jakarta. It is not easy to cheat in Jakarta compared to South Sulawesi. In the midst of unsatisfactory conditions people are not enthusiastic about having an election, but they think like this: to be a good citizen it is better to vote. In fact, in politics we don’t have a choice between the good and bad and we can’t see it as “black and white”. What we choose is the one that we can count on. What about the PPP’s raising the issues of political rights and poverty? I think Buya (PPP’s Chair) television speeches were right. Bu
